Why the Lebanese Diaspora Is Lebanon's Most Powerful Resource | Yalla Nour

There are more Lebanese living outside Lebanon than inside it. The diaspora sends billions of dollars home every year. Yalla Nour exists to make that giving more strategic, more transparent, and more impactful.

Why the Lebanese Diaspora Is Lebanon's Most Powerful Resource

There is a saying in Lebanon: "Lebanon is not a country. It is a state of mind." And nowhere is that more true than in the diaspora.
There are an estimated 14 million people of Lebanese descent living outside Lebanon - compared to just 4 million inside the country. The Lebanese diaspora is one of the most educated, entrepreneurial, and successful diaspora communities in the world.
And when Lebanon suffers, the diaspora feels it.

The Numbers Behind Diaspora Giving
Lebanese diaspora remittances have consistently been one of the largest sources of income for Lebanon, often exceeding 20% of GDP. During the economic crisis, these remittances became a lifeline for millions of families.
But informal giving - sending money to a cousin, wiring funds to a church, paying a relative's hospital bill - while generous, is not strategic. It does not build institutions. It does not create sustainable change.

The Yalla Nour Model
Yalla Nour was founded on a simple premise: the diaspora has the resources and the love. What it needs is the structure.
By channeling diaspora giving through a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we accomplish three things:
1. Tax efficiency: Donors can deduct their contributions from US taxes, effectively increasing the value of every dollar given.
2. Vetting and accountability: We rigorously evaluate NGO partners before directing funds to them, ensuring that money reaches the children who need it most.
3. Scale: By pooling donations from hundreds of diaspora members, we can fund programs that no individual donor could support alone.
